I'm a student.
I'm an athlete.
I want to build a successful career.
Building your career is a rigorous undertaking. It is best to approach it in an organized manner.
A successful career process consists of not only finding a job, but finding the right job in the context of your own unique journey.
Before you get into finding opportunities and interviewing, you need to put yourself in the best possible position to even get to that point.
Are you ready?
There are specific best steps to take when thinking about and actually finding a job. You can (and most likely will) revisit and reapply all of these steps many times during your life.
By following the steps in our Program, you will get a better understanding of:
- • Yourself in the context of the job market
- • The overall job environment and possible job options
- • Principles and best practices to apply in your job search
- • What specific steps you need to take in order to create career success for yourself
Let's begin
As a student-athlete, you have clear priorities. These are 1. Academics, 2. Athletics and 3. Self-exploration. You need to give these three your full focus. After that, you should also spend time on the career search process.
Your sport has most likely played an important (if not the decisive) role to enroll in your school and you have an obligation to your coach and your teammates to be a valuable member of the team. Also the memories cannot be taken away from you, you leave with them.
College is the best time to explore your life priorities across the board – academically, athletically, personally. You have time and space to dedicate to yourself, so make sure to take advantage of that.
Also, if approached correctly, college can be one of the best time periods in your life.
You and your family have invested time, energy and money on your academic + athletic journey. With finding a job, you are starting to create a point of return on that investment (unless you are continuing with your further education after graduation, then you wait a bit longer).
Also, career exploration helps open your eyes to new opportunities in life overall.
We present you 7 steps to your successful career
Personal Assessment
The purpose of this step is to set a current overview of yourself as a person and as a job applicant.
Before you can attack any specific opportunities, you need to know yourself as well as possible in order to find what you are looking for.
Principles Acquisitions
The purpose of this step is for you to create a compass to help you navigate the hiring process (and beyond).
You will face a lot of uncertainty on your journey. Having a solid compass will help you take the right steps under any circumstance and will help to keep yourself level headed.
Learning from Sport Paralels
The purpose of this step is for you to explore the connections between your athletic experiences and your (future) career. Through this step, you will explore and specify the value you can bring to the table in terms of a skillset and character. Thus you will acquire better self awareness and confidence towards your career.
Exploration of Possible Fields
The purpose of this step is for you to know what general opportunities are out there in the job market.
You will go through the elimination process of figuring out what you want to do (and exploring further) or what you do not want to do.
Skills Aquisition
The purpose of this step is for you to increase the value you can offer in the job market. You will learn the most on the job but you must come equipped with as many relevant core skills as possible. You will work on your skills in terms of organization of work, task management, and problem solving.
Create Opportunities
The purpose of this step is for you to get acquainted with the specific hiring steps and get a job offer.
Selection/Negotiation process
The purpose of this step is to acquire the ability to make the best possible decision in terms of company selection and job position finalization.
You figure out your desirability and value in a given work environment.
